Kambia Launches Project to Combat Violence Against Women and Girls in Kambia District

Self Help and Development Everywhere – SHADE Kambia has officially launched a one-year project aimed at strengthening community protection and preventing violence against women and girls in Kambia District.

The project inception meeting was held today at the SHADE Conference Hall in Kambia with chiefs, government institutions, civil society, media, health workers, traditional and religious leaders in attendance.

Titled “Strengthening Community Protection and Capacity to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls in Kambia District”, the project is funded by Bread for the World – Civil Peace Service.

Speaking at the meeting, SHADE Director Madam Christiana Y. Kanu said the project will amplify the voices of women and girl survivors of sexual and gender-based violence. She added that it will create community platforms for advocacy and dialogue, build leadership skills for women and girls, and challenge harmful cultural norms that fuel violence. She urged all stakeholders to treat the project with seriousness.

Project Coordinator Mr. Ibrahim Sillah disclosed that implementation will cover Gbinleh, Dixion, and Magbema Chiefdoms. He said the project will empower young women and men to assert their rights non-violently, promote transparent management of community resources including land, and strengthen religious and intercultural tolerance.

Target groups include women and adolescent girls, especially survivors of violence, women with disabilities, youth groups, health workers, and community leaders.

Also addressing participants, National Coordinator of Bread for the World Civil Peace Service, Madam Adenkie Cole, said the partnership with SHADE is geared toward raising awareness on issues affecting women, girls, persons with disabilities, and men in homes and communities. She called on everyone to support the project to ensure its goals are achieved.

Participants from the 3 Chiefdoms, government ministries, health workers, and the 3 media houses present actively discussed SGBV issues. Questions, comments, and answers from community representatives climaxed the inception meeting, with stakeholders pledging support for the project.
The project runs from 2026 to 2027.
